Mayor Rick Green - Where Are You?

When the spat of gang violence rocked Langley sending regional media to all corners of Langley Township and the City of Langley, Mayor Rick Green was very vocal and present for every photo op and interview. This was not going to happen in his Township.  Law and order, throwing these people in jail for a long time, et al. All good things to do in these times of gang wars that put the general public at great risk. But what else is Mayor Green prepared to do about these problems beyond just the talk that has all but disappeared?

We note that a Provincial Remand Centre is still on the agenda in BC. One is badly needed and even Mayor Green's publicist agrees that Langley Township would be a great location for this remand centre. Sites have been identified here as well. As pointed out, these remand facilities are very secure and bring lots of good paying jobs to a local community and its businesses. There is much talk these days about community courts and the Township of Langley could negotiate a deal with the provincial government to take in a remand centre in exchange for a new Langley Community Court. Why not?

The Township has lots of land mass that would serve the remand centre well. Gloucester  Estates comes immediately to mind, but there are many other options and a location close to local restaurants and shops frequented by remand staff would be preferred. Several communities have stepped up to the plate, including Vancouver and even Mayor Green's old stomping ground of Delta. If Green has any innovation and negotiating skills in his tool box, we would think he would have been right on this whole remand centre band wagon. After all, you can't have it both ways. If you want to get tough on crime and lock people up, then you must be willing to put a remand centre in your municipality.

We think a remand centre is a great idea to stimulate the local economy in Langley Township, and get us a community court that we greatly need and could serve other communities such as Langley City and Abbotsford. The later would not be happy, as Abby has been trying to get a community court for some time now. So, what do you say Mayor Green? Will you walk the talk or just talk the talk on this one?

Kooky Kim was away so Tricky Ricky has not received his marching orders from her yet. When she gets back I am sure she will tell him what to think about this prison.

He will have to check with the Milnerites and the Browns Pit folks to see if it is okay to move ahead - that is of course after he has checked with Kooky Kim (aka KK). Once they give the go ahead then it will be another 'coup de tete) from the Mayor's office just like the railway agreement that was leaked to the NDP.

remand centre in langley for vancouver courts??I WOULD LIKE TO MEET THIS FINANCIAL GENIUS. 100 KLM ROUND TRIP TO COURT IN VANCOUVER. THIS SOUNDS LIKE A MAKE WORK PROJECT FOR A FEW SHERIFFS. REMAND CENTRE SHOULD BE PLACED AS CLOSE TO THE COURTS AS POSSIBLE. IF WE ARE WORRIED ABOUT OUR ENVIROMENT PEOPLE IN AUTHORITY NEED TO THINK OF FUEL USED ALSO TRAFFIC.GOVERMENT ALREADY REMOVED OUR LANGLEY COURT HOUSE. FORCING LANGLEY RESIDENTS AND POLICE OFFICERS TO TRAVEL TO SURREY FOR COURT APPERANCES. EACH AREA NEEDS TO TAKE CARE OF IT,S OWN SERVICES .IF YOU HAVE A COURT HAVE YOU OWN REMAND CENTRE IN YOUR OWN TOWN. I MADE A MISTAKE IT IS NOT ONE TRIP IT IS TWO ROUND TRIPS FOR EACH COURT APPERANCE.

If you read the article you would see that the Vancouver remand centre closed in 2002. As land becomes more precious and decisions are made for "higher use" we have to change our way of thinking. Community Courts also reduce the numbers of cases that require people to go to Surrey or elsewhere. Remand is needed for the harder core offenses and it would be very impractical to run remand centres in every community. It makes more sense to have regional facilities and to service the City of Vancouver from the suburbs. Higher use!

MR EDITOR I LOVE YOUR WAY OF THINKING.OIL IS A NON RENUABLE RESOURCE. SHERIFF VANS TEN MILES TO THE GALLON . FIVE LITRES AN HOUR IDLING.WE ARE NOT EVEN CLOSE TO ANY SUBSTANTIAL ALTERNATE ENERGY SOURCE THINK ABOUT MY GRANDCHILDREN OR ANY GENERATION AFTER THAT WITH NO ENERGY . THEN HOW DO WE TRANSPORT THESE PEOPLE? THE TOWNSHIP OF LANGLEY PURCHASED A TOWN HALL AWAY FROM THE WORKS YARD AND THE MAIN FIRE HALL NOW EMPLOYEES RUNNING WILLY NILLY ALL OVER THE PLACE WASTING MORE PRECIOUS FUEL.

Ok, so then let's create a whole boat load of government jobs and redundant facilities to tackle the problem, eh? The Sheriffs have a variety of vehicles that include standard vans that have been beefed up. Hell, you could even get some Hybrids! If fuel is the issue then create a prison train and run them down the tracks. Surrey should have a court that deals with these issues and then the travel Isn't as extensive. We waste far more fuel right now.

I notice KK's blog from nowhere is still silent. Did anyone get an invitiation to the funeral? Maybe Horny and Willy were the only two present. So silent on the election (devastating to them), issues such as this one (NDP oppose these you know, askk Cathy Corrigan), and for that matter any Township issues of late. It is actually nice not having to read their trash anyway - keep up the good work editor(s)!

It's okay "all caps" anonymous. You can just say that you don't want the remand centre in your backyard.....no one would blame you. The movement in and out of a centre is not as high as you make it out to be and the fuel bill would be balanced out by the low number of correction officers per inmate.
